Service your heating and water

Know the location of all gas shut-off valves and the main water shut-off. Make sure your heating system and all fuel burning appliances are adequately vented and properly maintained.

Check your electrics

Check for exposed wiring and cable. Check cords and plugs and replace at first sign of wear or damage. If fuses blow, circuit breakers trip frequently, or any appliance sparks or shorts out it could be due to a bigger problem.

Check your alarms

Test all smoke and safety alarms. If you don’t have a smoke detector on each floor, buy and install them.

Check for damp walls

Check the corners of your house to see if there is any interior/exterior damp being caused by trapped stagnated water.

Check brickwork & rendering

Look for significant cracks in rendering and brickwork which may need pointing. Vegetation should be removed from walls and gutters as they can damage stone/brickwork and retain moisture in the wall.

Sort out dripping taps

They can waste up to 30 litres of water a day – and waste your money. They are also a sure sign your plumbing system is in need of maintenance, don’t ignore the problem get it fixed.

Visually inspect your roof at least twice a year

Look for broken, cracked or missing tiles or slates, gaps between joins or defective fascias/soffits. It can be extremely expensive to put right if repairs are left to mount up.

Check your guttering

Look out for a build up of water. A blocked gutter can end up broken or could lead to serious damp problems if not cleared quickly.
